OUAT Stars Attend Whispers Of Life Private Screening

The stars of Once Upon A Time came out in force last weekend to give support to a film that hopes to raise awareness to sensitive social issues that go untalked about: gay teen suicide and the devastating effects that bullying can have.

The social relevance and importance of this message and film is undeniable. It is reported that “suicide attempts amongst high school student aged queer youth is reported to be two to seven times higher compared to those that describe themselves as heterosexual” (Haas et al 17; 2011).

Talking about the film, director Florian Halbedl revealed that:

"The core idea behind Whispers of Life was inspired by the onslaught of publicized gay, teen suicides. The short film works as an artistic intervention to challenge the societal taboo of suicide, the pervasive and damaging effects of anti-gay bullying and the fact that these issues are not discussed openly.

Consequently I began writing the script with the intention of placing two strangers in a transient and public space and in a situation that required immediate communication, honesty and a sense of urgency. I thought, “What would you do, if you came across a stranger in a public space and during a seemingly surface-level conversation, it was revealed to you that the person is considering, or on the verge of committing, suicide".

Synopsis

Deep in his thoughts and enjoying the peaceful surroundings, Tom, a gay teenager, is jolted out of his quaint and meditative park retreat by painful and homophobic words from his classmate.

A few benches over, sits Charles, a man in his late forties, who witnesses the bullying. After the bullies leave, and to Tom’s surprise, Charles appears right next to him. The two strike up a conversation that quickly turns serious when Tom asks if Charles has ever thought about suicide.

In this magical story about the interdependence of imagination and survival, and their life- changing connection, the boundaries between stranger/friend and survival/suicide are challenged when Charles takes Tom on a fantastical journey into Tom’s imagination that will forever alter the course of Tom’s future and life.

Will Ariel Appear In Neverland?

Speaking with E.W, Eddy Kitsis pondered the possibility of Ariel finally making her debut next season:“Obviously Neverland brings up mermaids and it brings up fairies,” says Kitsis. “We have ideas for Ariel. When we introduce her is up in the air because we’re still figuring out what we want to do. There’s a possibility we’ll see her.”

"The thing that we love to do and that we will continue to do is, we do love to be able to say, here’s the backstory of an iconic character, but it’s not what you think,” Kitsis says. “So for Beauty and the Beast, we realized the beast was Rumpelstiltskin. And we realized Bae was with the Darlings, and that Red Riding Hood was the wolf. We still want to be able to show you our versions of things, and of course Ariel is at the top of the list.”

Fellow co-creator Adam Horowitz added: "She’s “one of our favorite characters” and “if and when we do it, we just want to make sure we do it right.”

Neverland Art Competition

Fierce pirates, a misty mermaid lagoon, fairies and flying boys with no grown ups to boss them around; iconic images of Neverland that have stuck with me my whole life.

Oncers are a creative lot and I thought it would be fun to ask you to produce your vision of what the 'Once' Neverland might look like. This contest is open to any artistic medium (i.e. traditional pencil, paint, etc. as well as digital mediums).

I do ask that if you submit in a 'traditional' medium that you send a good scan or photograph of it (properly cropped). Oncers are also welcome to use the Once Upon A Fan logo as part of their vision.

OUAT May Crossover with Wonderland!

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Once Upon a Time and its upcoming spinoff Once Upon a Time in Wonderland will cross paths at some point this fall.

While series creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis are eager to establish the show as a stand alone TV event with an easily accessible story, characters from the original series will be crossing over. In fact the first episode of Wonderland currently starts in Storybrooke!

In the past, Adam and Eddy have also hinted that the Queen of Hearts, played by Barbara Hershey, will return. Options to have Sebastian Stan return as the Mad Hatter are still being discussed and will all depend on his incredibly busy schedule.

Michael Raymond-James To Become A Series Regular

ABC Fall Schedule

ABC have announced their new schedule for the 2013-2014 TV season.

Once Upon a Time will remain in the Sunday night 8pm time slot. Spin-off series Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, which was originally envisioned to bride the gap between Once Upon a Time‘s fall and spring run, will take the 8pm time slot on a Thursday night and will run concurrently with OUAT.

In other scheduling news, ABC is shaking up the scheduling of some of its serialized dramas. Taking a page from the cable model, the network will air what ABC president Paul Lee called “a selected group” of dramas in two uninterrupted runs, one in the fall and one in the spring, bridged by limited series runs.

The series that will follow the new scheduling pattern include Once Upon A Time, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and likely Revenge, with others TBD. So far, the network only has set up a bridge series for Once, new adventure reality series The Quest. Lee said such bridge series won’t necessarily be all unscripted. Two cycles of 12 episodes would bring the total orders for the shows to 24, which is hard on a complex, serialized drama, but Lee indicated that number has not been set in stone.

The season two finale of Once Upon A Time, 'Straight On 'Till Morning', gained around 7.22 million viewers in the initial overnight ratings, remaining steady with a 2.2 in the 18-49 demo.

Over in the UK, episode 6 of season 2, 'Tallahassee', pulled in 961,000 viewers on Channel 5, continuing a steady climb in ratings over the past few weeks.

UPDATE: Once Upon A Time season two finale adjusted up to 7.33 million viewers and a 2.3 in the 18-49 demo.

Kitsis & Horowitz Tease Season Three!

The season may be over but series creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis are already hard at work teasing us about what's coming this fall in the show's third season. A sample of their interview with Entertainment Weekly is below:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How long have you been planning to incorporate Peter Pan into the show? I remember hearing last year that you had to work out a few rights issues first.

EDWARD KITSIS: Honestly, the whole first year, we wanted to do Neverland, and we never could because of the rights issues — which seemed weird, because Disney had a Peter Pan movie, and they had a show called Jake and the Neverland Pirates. We don’t know how or why, but they figured it out. When we finished season 1, we got the go-ahead before we did what we call “mini-camp” — in between seasons, we take two weeks, three weeks, and just kind of blue sky the season. We learned this on Lost. [Both Kitsis and Horowitz wrote for ABC's mystical drama.] That’s when we came up with our Neverland.

Initially, did you have different plans for how you wanted to use Pan?

KITSIS: We knew we wanted to do Hook first. The first idea we had was that Rumpelstiltskin was the crocodile. We talked about, “Why would these two hate each other? What is the thing that could come between them?” And we both realized, “A woman.”

One of the finale’s biggest surprises is that Rumpelstiltskin seems to have tangled with Pan before.

KITSIS: He absolutely knows who Peter Pan is. In true Mr. Gold/Rumpel style, he knows more than Greg and Tamara.

ADAM HOROWITZ: And there’s certainly the implication that there’s a history there, one we’re eager to unfold.

Neverland is a mysterious island filled with mysterious people who kidnap boys for mysterious reasons. The whole thing seems like a callback to another show you two used to work on.

HOROWITZ: Uh, I don’t know what you’re referring to.

KITSIS: It’s funny — I didn’t think of that.

HOROWITZ: We honestly hadn’t thought of that, really, until you brought it up.

KITSIS: Peter Pan is my favorite. I love the idea that all the Lost Boys were orphans, and that they wanted Wendy to be their mom. In episode 21, Wendy painted this great portrait of what Neverland is, but of course...

It’s actually kind of bleak and sad.

KITSIS: Things are fun for a day, but you need your family. You need an anchor in your life. And so I think we’re seeing that Neverland is a very seductive place for children. But now that you say that, the subtext…

HOROWITZ: You can take the writers out of Lost.

KITSIS: But you can’t take the Lost out of the writers.

HOROWITZ: But we can promise you, no smoke monster in Neverland.

We’re not going to find Tinker Bell at the bottom of a hatch?

KITSIS: No, but Ben Linus might be there.

He’s kind of like a fairy tale villain.

KITSIS: He is! He’s the man behind the curtain.

HOROWITZ: Don’t forget, Ben Linus started as Henry Gale from Wizard of Oz.

KITSIS: We’re really not bringing in Benjamin Linus, because he has a very successful TV show. Before people get excited — it’s a joke!

Last year Once Upon A Fan raised over $14,000 for the With Kids charity throughout 2012. This year we hope to raise money for Stand Up 2 Cancer. We were trying to think of some fun ways for fans to participate in our fundraiser and BINGO! It came to us. What if fans played Once Upon A Time Bingo for charity?

Here is how to do it - Each week for the rest of this season we will publish a set of Bingo cards designed for the new episode. The Once Bingo Cards will feature characters, events, phrases or items we expect to see during the show that week. Fans can download and print these cards to play Bingo as they watch the show.

How can you raise money by playing Bingo? - We thought it could work like this. Each fan can pledge a certain amount of money they will donate for each 'hit' on their card. For example, a 50 cents per hit pledge would mean a 25 square card could be up to a $12.50 donation.

You could add additional donation amounts for actually getting Bingo. The amounts are up to you. We just want you to have fun while helping out what we see as a worthy charity.

Colin O'Donoghue Teases A Big Finish!

TV Line caught up with Colin O'Donoghue to grill him about his part in the season two finale. A sample of the interview is below.

TVLINE | When last we tuned in, Bae had just gotten fished out of the drink by Hook. What does the captain make of this strange boy?

Well, he’s just managed to find this boy floating in the middle of the sea, so it’s kind of an intriguing thing. He’s interested in who he could be or where he comes from.

TVLINE | I understand they find some things in common, as we get insight into Hook’s background.

Yes, you learn a little bit through Bae. You learn a bit about where Hook was from and about his background. You get to find out more about Hook and how he became the person that he is.

TVLINE | The scoundrel that he is.

Yeah, pretty much!

TVLINE | And what if Hook were to learn who Bae is?

Well, it’s bound to have some effect on him, because of the history with Rumplestiltskin and Milah….

TVLINE | What is Hook’s standing there in Neverland? What’s his relationship to that realm, to The Shadow, to the Lost Boys? What kind of dynamic will we discover?

It’s going to be very interesting for people to see Hook in Neverland and see [cocreators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz's] take on Neverland, because as you can tell from the way they’ve set up the other characters from other stories, everything’s not as it seems. As we know, [today's] Captain Hook is very different than Hook from before. For Hook, going to Neverland — as we saw in the “Crocodile” episode — was very much about being able to take some time to figure out how to get his revenge on Rumpelstiltskin. That’s his reason for being there. But it’ll be interesting to see if and how he will interact with the Lost Boys or whomever in Neverland.
