A Fan Theory by Wishes Are Children
One of the many questions that fans would like to see answered this season is related to Prince Charming. His mother, Ruth, calls him “son” in conversation. Snow refers to her husband as “Charming”, or “David,” but never, presumably, by the name he was given at birth. Based on what Adam and Eddy have told us, fans will learn the truth regarding Charming’s real name sometime this season. Until that time comes, the following evidence suggests that David is in fact…David. (Sorry, Josh Dallas, we’re sure The Force would have been with you if you were Luke Skywalker.)
First, take note that the giant Emma and Hook encountered at the top of the beanstalk is said to be one of the characters in the upcoming “Tiny” episode. Perhaps the people of Storybrooke are destined to be thought of as “itsy bitsy” since Cora will allegedly bring Anton the Giant to town. He will encounter humans, but we are unsure if he will be vengeful, make friends, or destroy the town and have a change of heart in the process.
Next, there have been reports that Prince Charming and Emma will sheriff together, meaning that Charming may still feel responsible for the well-being of the people from the Enchanted Forest. Emma will no doubt need the insight and support of those she trusts in Storybrooke, where things are bound to go a bit haywire. Despite Emma and David’s seemingly different perspectives and experiences, one can hope for some meaningful father/daughter bonding moments in the future.
Third, when David wakes up from his coma, we see that the curse took some time to take its full effect on him. While standing outside of his supposed house, David can’t seem to recall the windmill that used to be on the lawn. Later, David walks into Gold’s shop, and tells the owner that the windmill belonged to him. Perhaps Regina knew that he was David, and called him this because she knew that part of him remembered, or would remember the name.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, it is quite possible that the historical figure King David of Israel was inspiration for the character of Prince Charming. While looking over their pasts, we can see that they have the same name and share many notable life events. Both were shepherds who rose to nobility, married women named Abigail, were hounded by a jealous king they had opportunities to kill, and at their worst were known for having an affair that negatively affected others.
When making the above connection, we can attempt to make a prediction regarding the coming actions of our favorite prince. Maybe David Nolan is David in The Enchanted Forest as well, and will take part in confronting the giant in “Tiny,” just as King David of Israel most famously dealt with the giant Goliath in the book of Samuel. If David does not encounter a tangible giant, it is likely that Spencer/King George, or Fate will throw Prince Charming challenges that will allow him to prove himself as both a hero and a capable leader.
