What Is Charming's Real Name by Zach Van Norman

What is Charming's real name?

Prince Charming is quite the dashing fellow; even Regina can see the allure. And while the charmer's backstory has been revealed, one question still remains: what is Prince "Charming" James' real name?

Most Oncers are aware of Charming's history, but for those who are not, a quick recap:

Prince James was one of a set of twin boys, traded to King George through Rumplestiltskin as an infant by his desperate parents. His brother, a shepherd, was still alive and living with their natural mother Ruth, unaware of his brother's fate or existence. James grew up to be a great warrior, meeting his end at the hands of a devious enemy. King George, needing a son to unite his kingdom with that of King Midas, dispatched Rumplestiltskin again to Ruth's farm. There he offered to save their failing land if her shepherd son would agree to take his brother's place as Prince. While disgusted with the offer at first, the Shepherd agreed to the deal and assumed the name of Prince James.

But what was the Shepherd's name before he took his brother's name?

I think the answer is in front of us: it's David.

Regina showed a spot of affection for Charming in both Episode 20 "The Stranger" and Episode 21 "An Apple Red As Blood."

I think she may have liked him enough to have given him back his real name, as her own twisted gift to him in Storybrooke.

Ok so Josh Dallas recent interview with TV Line hinted that Charmings real name and role in fairytale land is "surprising...and obvious." Which got me thinking about what his identity might actually be for once. I'm more of a Rumbelle fan not Snowing but I still love to watch the two either way on the show. So it got me thinking back to season one and I think I've figured it out! Charming is Marques or Nestor btw both are the same people from Cat in Boots. I know silly but here are my reasons.

Clues as seen in season one:
The wind mill that belonged to him.
The lost of his father.
Lived in poverty.
Had a brother who got the "better" half of their parents dealing.
Imporsonated as a prince (in my fairytale it was a lord but still a class of nobility nonetheless who is unknown to the king)
In the fairytale as the king meets the so called Lord Marques he was deem by him to be handsome and polished enough to marry.

If my theory is true than that would make Rumplestiltskin the Cat in Boots. Yes I know what your all thinking. "Robert Carlyle plays Rumplestiltskin, the Beast but now he's also the Cat in Boots!" Yeah and there wouldn't be anything wrong with him playing three different yet in a way similar characters.

The Cat in Boots is well known for:
Tricking and deceiving people in order to gain wealth and power among other things. (Hmmmm does that sound familiar to anyone?)
As the story goes on the cat discovers the kings need to marry of his daughter (different from OUaT but the kings need for a marriage to take place is still within those lines.) Etc.

There are other versions of this tale written quite differently from the one I remember when I was a child. Still I can't help but see the possible link to Rumplestiltskin and Charmings story in a way and if any of you are interested in checking it out I'm sure you'll see it too! Again this is my take on who he might be but I can be wrong. I like your twisted way of thinking too by the way. ;) I couldn't help but get excited at the possibility of the two. As a kid I was always fond of the cat for proving his more than he appears to his doubtful owner. However I've notice that the fairytale book that I have is significantly far more amusing and simpler than the English version. Lol.

I 100% agree with David being Prince Charmings real name I've been saying this for sometime now it just seems to fit, with him being a Shepard and all.

I' bet my all my money on this. After all, isn't Snow White called Mary Margaret in Storybrooke? Let's remember she used that name when she met Red and Granny for the first time. So he really could be named that too (Snow called him David in Broken and there's that speech in 2x01 too). It would make perfect sense.

In his speech in 'We Are Both' he said he wouldn't give up 'that David'. Which made me think: So are you a David in both realms?
