Its obvious that the writers name these characters specifically based on their FT selves, so Dr. Whale means something but it may not be as obvious, just like August Wayne Booth does not automatically yell, "Pinocchio." However, theories suggest that A Real Boy (ARB) could be where the name comes from having a W in place for the R. As far as Mary Margaret's name is concerned, everyone keeps forgetting about her last name-Blanchard. That's where the white from Snow White comes in. To blanch something means to lighten it or blanca in Spanish means White. Think about Emma Swan's name. The Swan is supposed to imply the "white" from Snow White even though Swans can be other colors. Regina Mills name does ot suggest Evil Queen but her father was the miller or grandfather was. Ashley for "Cinder"ella is too easy. I am still not sure about Dr. Whale even though many theories point to Dr. Frankenstein or Dr. Frankensten's monster. He is definitely not Capt Hook based on promo pics of his left arm being injured and Capt Hook's hook being on his rt arm. I feel like his predatory ways, possibly womanizing, as well as his infatuation with Ruby is intriguing. Is he a wolf as well? But then, what about the carnations and sparks flying in his dating profile? This could suggest Dr. Frankenstein. I do not remember the Moby Dick story well but were there sparks flying in that novel? I know Ahab lost a leg, not an arm. Also, his backstory is supposed to be in the episode with Tail in the title....curious.

Could "Whale" be a nod to Wales? Are there any fairy tale/folk tales his character seems to referece?

Have we seen the spelling on Dr. Whale's name -- it coild be wail or even wale, which is a word relating to ridges in knitting. I too wonder if the "whale" is to obvioius. I'm leaning towards a nefarious character who has lost powers. I was thinking Merlin but I think that character is way too strong and significant to be a supporting role in the story. What about a male Morgaine? There's still Jack with his pale that rhymes with whale. Nursery rhyme maybe?

Great question! One of the most famous legends ever told comes from Wales -- King Arthur. I never thought about this before, but I like the way you think. Only thing is, King Arthur somewhat famously had red hair so I doubt the good doctor is actually Arthur. But he could be one of the knights or Merlin easily enough. I keep going back to his expression during the S1 finale when the curse was broken. He was sort of off by himself, and he just looked devastated. Just absolutely crushed.

Not sure if any of you saw the recent promo, but about 23 seconds into it, you see EQ, Jefferson & Dr. Whale but in FTL. going down some stairs. Dr. Whale is carrying an old fashioned leather doctor's bag. EQ stills seems like young Regina. We also see Jefferson & Dr. Whale escaping via a vortez from Rumple. More importantly, we see a night shot, EQ and Jefferson standing outside a tent, with the figure of a Doctor operating on someone inside the tent. Lightening hits a metal rod on top of the tent and lghts the interior up. Sure looks like Dr. Frankenstein's theory may be a winner. Who else but EQ would have motive for wanting to bring someone back from the dead? I believe Daniel is Dr. Frankie's monster.

WOW! You are so right! I just watched the promo again and paused it at the part where he's in the tent. It really does look like he's operating on a body. I never believed anyone when they said he's Frankenstein, but this promo proves me wrong. Great, Great find! Thank you for posting
