We begin this episode in the clouds. The Blue fairy is welcoming another fairy by the name of Nova. She is quite clumsy. In fact she drops her bag of fairy dust. Blue explains to her that her bag is a years worth of fairy dust and is the most powerful magic in the world. She tells her that she must be careful with it and sends her to the mines to gather more fairy dust.
The mine contain a batch of large eggs. Most of Nova's dropped fairy dust falls on one egg, which hatches early.
In Storybrook Mary Margaret is at the diner trying to get volunteers for the Miners Day celebration. Everybody is still angry at her for breaking up David and Kathryn's marriage, and she is not having any luck getting volunteers. She leaves the diner visibly upset, and Emma follows her outside. She asks Mary why she is beating herself up over charity work. Mary tells her she has never been a home wrecker before and had to do something to make up for it. Emma gets a phone call from the Sheriff's office and has to leave.
Emma's call was about a car that was stranded on the side of the road. She goes to check it out, and Sidney shows up to help her with the investigation. The car wasn't crashed, but the airbags had gone off, and the car was left running. Emma identified the car as Kathryn Nolan's. She tells Sidney Kathryn was planning on leaving town and that she probably planned the whole thing so they wouldn't find her. That is, until they open the trunk and notice her suitcase is still there. Sidney tells Emma that he will get Kathryn's phone records for her because it would take too long for the Sheriff's office to get them. At that moment, David pulls up in his truck to find out what's going on.
Astrid is setting up for the miner's day celebration. She is on top of a ladder and drops snow on Leroy. She apologizes and tells him she can't fix the lights. He fixes them for her. She calls him her hero, and asked if he was an electrician. He tells her he is a custodian, but that he had once bought a boat and wanted to sail around the world. Astrid tells him that someone once told her that you can do anything as long as you can dream it. She leaves to go back to the volunteer center.
One of the dwarfs hatches out of his egg. Bossy is clipping his beard and the dwarf asks him where the woman is that he saw. Bossy tells him that there are no female dwarfs. He tells him that dwarfs do not fall in love, do not marry, and do not have children. They hatch from eggs, and they only work. Bossy tells him that they provide all the fairy dust in the kingdom. The rest of the eggs hatch. The dwarves are all cleaned and given their axe. Once they hold their axe, their name appears on it. The dwarf that hatches first is given his axe and his name is Dreamy.
Leroy goes to the volunteer center to see what he can do to help for the celebration. Mary tells him he can help her with the candle booth. In the same room, Astrid is speaking with another Mother Superior (whom we see is the Blue Fairy). She is upset because Astrid was supposed to order 12 tanks of helium and instead she has ordered 12 dozen tanks. Mother Superior tells Astrid that now they are not going to have enough money for rent and that she has to fix the problem. Leroy tries to comfort Astrid, and tells her not to worry, that he will help her, and they will sell all the candles. She gets excited, and calls Leroy her hero once more.
Emma is at Kathryn's car talking to David. He tells her he hasn't spoken to Kathryn since they ended things. He goes on to tell Emma that when he got home all of Kathryn's stuff was gone and he assumed that she had left for Boston. Emma promises David she will find her. At the mayor's office, Regina is printing off phone records and calls Sidney to let him know they are ready.
Mary is angry at Leroy for promising Astrid that they would sell all of the candles. He tells her it is important to him and he will find a way to get the money. Mary guesses that he likes Astrid, and tells him that they could never have a relationship because she is a nun. Leroy tells Mary that he doesn't like being told what he can and cannot do.
Dreamy and Nova are at the mine collecting fairy dust. Dreamy tells Nova he saw her in his dreams before he hatched. Nova accidentally drops her fairy dust bag onto the conveyor belt heading for the furnace. Dreamy saves her dust and Nova calls him her hero again. She confesses that she is very clumsy. She tells Dreamy all she wants is to be a fairy godmother, but she can't even get the dust right. He tells her that all she has to do is dream it, and it can happen. She tells him she is going to see the fireflies on the hilltop, trying in vain to invite him, but he doesn't get the hint.
Mary and Leroy are trying to sell candles, but they are not having much luck. Leroy tells Mary they need to go door to door to sell them, because people would pay them to leave. Emma goes to see Sidney and tells him again to get her Kathryn's phone records. Sidney tries to point the blame on Mary, but Emma tells him she knows her and she did having anything to do with Kathryn's disappearance. Mary and Leroy go to sell candles and are turned down at every door.
The dwarfs are at a bar eating. Dreamy is not eating and Bossy asks him what's wrong. He tells Bossy that he can't eat or sleep and that something is bothering him. Bossy tells him its nothing to worry about, that dwarfs dont get sick. Belle is there and overhears. She tells Dreamy he is in love. Bossy says that is impossible because dwarfs can't fall in love. Belle tells them that she has been in love enough to know when one is in love, and that Dreamy was in it. Dreamy asks her why he feels so bad and Belle tells him it's because he needs to be with the person he is in love with. She tells him to go and find his love, hopes, and dreams.
Astrid is at the volunteer center. Leroy tells her he has bad news, but can't bring himself to tell her. Instead, he tells her they sold all the candles and they would not lose the convent. Mary Margaret chews him out, telling him that they can't come up with $5000. He tells her not to worry, that he has a plan and to give him until the end of the day. Mary guesses he likes Astrid and tells him he could not have picked a more unavailable person. He tells her she has no room to talk since she had an affair herself.
Dreamy meets Nova at the hilltop to see the fireflies. He tells Nova they can get a boat and see the world together. She kisses him and agrees to meet him there the next night after she drops off the fairy dust.
Leroy is at the dock trying to sell his boat to Mr. Gold for $5000. Mr. Gold tells him it is only worth about $3000. Leroy goes on to say that he doesn't even need the money, that he can have the boat if he will just forgive the nuns their rent this month. Mr. Gold refuses, saying they are distasteful tenants and that he has a long and complicated history with them. Astrid meets Leroy at his boat to bring him a pie to say thank you. She sees the candles on the boat and realizes that Leroy has lied to her. She turns around and leaves.
Sidney gives Emma the phone records. There is an eight minute phone call from David to Kathryn one hour before the crash. Emma says David wasn't lying and Sidney tells her people lie, not phone records.
Mary Margaret is having a drink at the bar and Leroy joins her. He tells her he was unable to get the money.
Dreamy is sneaking out of the mine. Sleathy overhears him leaving. Dreamy tells him he is leaving the mine to go see the world with Nova. Bossy tells him he can't go because he has a responsibility to the mine to collect the fairy dust, and that he is also incapable of falling in love. The Blue Fairy shows up and tells Dreamy the same thing. She tells him that if he and Nova start a relationship, it will not end well. She goes on to explain that Nova would lose her wings. He tells him to go back to the mine and allow Nova to become the great fairy she was meant to be.
Mary and Leroy are talking. She tells him a relationship between him and Astrid would never work. He says he didn't want to disappoint her because she was the first person that ever believed in him. Leroy gets an idea and leaves the bar. He climbs to the top of a building and hits the transformer, causing a blackout. Mary Margaret asks him what he is doing and he tells her, "I'm selling candles sister."
Dreamy meets Nova and she shows him a boat equipped with everything they need to see the world. He tells her he can't go with her, that he belongs with the dwarfs and she belongs with the other fairies. He tells her he can't stand in the way of her happiness. She tells him she loves him and he tells her he is incapable of love and returns to the mines. He goes back to work and breaks his axe. Bossy gets him a new one. The name changes from Dreamy to Grumpy.
At the festival, Mary Margaret and Leroy sell out of all the candles. Leroy takes Astrid the money. Mary Margaret goes to her car and tramp is painted on the side of it once again. Instead of getting in the car she turns around to walk home. Granny takes her by the hand and lights her candle. As Mary Margaret is walking home, she sees Emma with David. Emma tells David she has to take him to the station to answer questions, and puts him in the back of the patrol car.
